Fermoy town council
November Press Releases
The Green Party Representative for Fermoy has called on members of the Town’s council to be innovative in their response to decreased revenues for the coming year. Speaking Ahead of Pre and final estimates meetings in the coming weeks, Adam Douglas said it was reality that capital and current provisions would be down and that the onus was on local councillors’ to Show leadership by reneging on conference expenses and other frivolous costs in the first instance and uniting to look at the common options available. He said the key was to maintain service Provision at near existing levels without further burdening local businesses through commercial rates hikes, ‘Efficiencies must be looked at wherever possible and proper oversight should be placed to the fore in the coming months and onwards. It was always unacceptable, but will become increasingly so, for people to see money being squandered at a time when people are being both told to and forced to tighten their belts. At the same time, adding another pressure to commercial operations in the town would be a backward and negative step and would likely strike a blow to the local economy. In addition the Green representative said ‘The October budget introduced many good measures to increase the local authority tax base, such as a tax on second homes and modest increases in motor taxation, which have little visible effect on enterprises. I am happy to support any member who favours business-friendly moves on a local level and to liaise with members about potential options available’.

- Douglas disappointed with Czech court’s Lisbon decision 28th November 2008
The Green Party Representative for Fermoy has signalled his disappointment with the decision of the Czech Republic’s constitutional court that the Lisbon Treaty is compatible with the Czech constitution. Speaking after the ruling, Adam Douglas said the decision is the effective Green light for the bypassing of yet another set of voters on a key question for the continent’s future, ‘If the Lisbon Treaty does not affect the constitution of any given country then I can hardly imagine what actually does. The irony of all this for the people of East Cork is that the 42,000+ people from this constituency who have already voted once on this document will probably now be asked to vote a second time before any other European nation has been given a chance to vote on it in the first instance. It’s a pity that the Power-holders in Europe didn’t take the opportunity that the June referendum defeat provided to open the document up to a wider democratic decision across Europe. He Also condemned the ‘whitewash’ that the Report of the Oireachtas Sub-committee on Ireland’s future in Europe provided and said it only attempted to legitimise a Poll re-run by scaremongering tactics, ‘It now seems more and more likely that we’ll be asked the same question all over again’, he concluded.
