    • -Rates demand notice an ‘insult to businesses’

      -Douglas slams council insensitivity

      29th March 2009
    • The Green Party Local Election candidate for Fermoy has slammed last week’s delivery of demand notices for commercial rates by the Town Council as poorly-timed and inconsiderate. Speaking in reaction to the issuing of the bills, Adam Douglas said the sums being levied show a complete lack of reality on behalf of the membership of the authority,

‘This is a powerful confirmation of what has been obvious since the budget decisions taken back in December. In reaction to an even worse financial situation than ever before, councillors have been seen to continue squeezing the productive part of the local economy to death, whilst certain members take away thousands of euros toward non-productive conferences and similar wasteful exercises. If they keep this up much longer there won’t be any rates to take in.

‘The reality is that there are less people shopping in the town than ever before due to a lethal cocktail of unemployment and lack of confidence, and that rates should drop to take note of this Changed environment, much the same as someone who took a salary cut wouldn’t be paying the same income tax bill. In Addition to that, detailed spending analysis should be posted on the council website so businesses can see how, exactly, sums equivalent the bill for a small Premises is being chucked into a perennial black-hole. The General outline of expenditure provided with the notice doesn’t tell half the story.

‘While the Government tries to sort out the Public finances, how can it ever be expected to stabilise employment when local authorities continue to hound businesses on the narrowest of profit-margins for these exorbitant sums? Certain councillors obviously think it’s morally right to continue to fund their junkets out of this money while tipping hard-pressed businesses over the brink. It’s time for these individuals to realise that Greed isn’t good.
