The Green Party Representative for Fermoy has said he is concerned by proposals from the European Commission to impose catching quotas on Pleasure angling, which could end up applying to the River Blackwater. The proposals, which are yet to be finalised, could see catches from sea and shore angling deducted from quotas of commercial fishing. Speaking in response to the news that this was being considered, Adam Douglas said the proposals could have a serious effect on the Fermoy area through a drop in tourism earnings from angling. ‘There is no doubt that the whole sector related to angling is of real significance to the town and its surrounding areas, both directly and through spin-off areas. Anything that might damage this value should be avoided. While I share the concern of commission members about falling fish stocks, and some quotas will certainly have to be looked at, what may be an issue in some EU member states does not necessarily apply in the same respect to Ireland. He added: ‘This week’s negotiations are more than crucial for all sides to get a sensible settlement that is appropriate to the countries involved. These proposals would certainly have a negative effect on the Irish angling industry, which is a major tourism economic asset nationally and in particular here in the Fermoy area’.
The Green Party Representative for Fermoy has said he is disgusted by the failure of Fine Gael’s only Town councillor to support a move by four other members to forego Conference Allowances for the coming year. Speaking in reaction to the Budget meeting for 2009, Adam Douglas said it highlights Fine Gael’s double Speak on the issue of value for money, ‘What we have here is a classical case of a party very critical of economic waste nationally but more than happy to squander money at the local level. Cllr. Pyne defiantly defends the indefensible where conference allowances are concerned and has knocked back a very sensible proposal on an evening where she would similarly have been aware of the swimming pool’s financial difficulties and the €1m town council deficit predicted for next year. In an ideal situation all of the €25k could have been saved and furthermore the €3k spent on membership of the AMAI, from which the conference culture developed in the first instance, could be seen as it is, an excess’. Adam Douglas was also very critical of the role of the Mayor during the evening’s proceedings, ‘As the town’s mayor, he is hardly a captain leading by example. Mayor O’Donovan both maintained his conference allowance and the mayoral allowance, both of which have questionable necessity in a time of Great financial difficulty. There is a justifiable sense that the man is bereft of a Clear map of where he wants the town to go and this is not a desirable situation now especially, nor at any time in particular. Finally, he suggested that Cllr Merrigan should research better the Minister for the Environment’s Proposals where incandescent lightbulbs are concerned, ‘Minister Gormley has brought forward the proposal to ban these bulbs from future sale, this will not, nor has ever been intended to, apply to lighting Already in Place. However, I’m sure as the current lighting will eventually have to be replaced, the People of Fermoy will appreciate new lighting which will be far more efficient and economical in the long-run’.
