introduction

Former Green Party candidate from Fermoy, Adam Douglas has confirmed his resignation from the Green Party.

Official press release due soon.

Folks, despite a long campaign I've failed to take a seat on this occasion, polling 2.2% in Fermoy, up from 1.4% in 2004, but not nearly high enough to Challenge for a seat on what was a far from memorable day for the party. The Party will recover from this, and for my part I Plan to keep in touch with my supporters here as always and to work towards 2014.

Thank you all for your encouragement and I look forward to working with you soon.

Regards, Adam.

Information is still available here on the website, aswell as on twitter, micandidate, and Election09.

Adam Douglas is a Student of International Relations at Dublin City University. Adam has a keen interest in issues surrounding public transport, business development and community facilities in his area, and believes Local Government needs to be reformed from below, through fresh faces in council seats, as well as from Above.

I relish the opportunity to offer a real alternative to the politics that has rendered the existing council ineffective in the face of a number of recent decisions and challenges. My party and I bring with us a positive message about the future for this area; for this vision to be realised the presence of Green Councillors is essential. I look forward to meeting the people over the coming weeks and to hearing their concerns and setting out my policy agendas for Fermoy.

Summary of Issues to be Addressed

  • Business & Development
  • Tourism
  • Transport
  • The fact that Fermoy Town Council is increasingly becoming one of the greyest councils in the country, in itself provides a Good explanation for why there seems to be a complete staleness in ideas from our Elected Representatives.

In the Local & national tabs issues of the page, I outline in more detail what I’d do differently to Give this town the excellence in leadership it deserves. Suffice to say, for me being a councillor would be more about serving my community than serving myself.

Amongst the recommendations set out, of which I intend to move swiftly to bring about upon Election, are a raft of measures that save maximum cost with minimal impact on services people and the town rely on.

In Addition Regulatory Changes will bring about the freedom or restrictions (Where appropriate) that will help Fermoy achieve its maximum vibrancy.

Fermoy, built on the River Blackwater, is a Garrison Town. At the height of British rule, it accommodated the largest Military Establishment on the Island of Ireland. Fermoy is located on the crossroads between the Rosslare/Killarney and Dublin/Cork routes. Today it is a small modern industrial town of about 5,000 people.

It is an attractive base to explore the history and amenities of North and East Cork. Fermoy is renowned as an inland fishing centre, the rivers Blackwater (left), Funcheon and the Bride being particularly famous.

The surrounding unspoilt countryside is some of the most scenic in the area, with its mixture of valleys, rivers, mountains, period houses and castles.

The former N8 through the town is now a regional road, the R639, and Fermoy's traffic problems have been greatly eased. Since the opening of the bypass in 2007, Fermoy has reclaimed the honour of being one of the most desirable, vibrant locations in Munster.

It boasts a wonderful community spirit while providing all the services, amenities and educational structures that add up to a great quality of life. My task ahead is to improve these structures and provide a great quality of life for future generations ahead.
